International students are automatically enrolled in this three-month temporary coverage. If you want to ensure you are enrolled, please discuss with your International Student Advisor (ISA).
Under the Medicare Protection Act, enrolment with the Medical Services Plan (MSP) is mandatory for all eligible residents (including international students) and their dependents. MSP covers medically required services such as visits to doctors, hospital stays and diagnostic medical testing. There is a three-month waiting period before new residents to BC are eligible for coverage.
If you are arriving in the summer or winter semester, you must opt in. It provides prescription coverage and many other extended medical options.

Phone or research the type of specialist you seek to see and ask them if a referral is needed. In most cases, seeing a general practitioner is needed for a referral. This can be a lengthy process.
You can choose to have your doctor send your prescription to a pharmacy of your choice or take the prescription form to any pharmacy.
Most insurers, such as TRUSU’s Greenshield, cover the cost of your prescription. In cases where you must pay for a prescription up front, keep your receipt and submit a claim.
