The establishment of the wildfire institute is a significant step forward in supporting Canadians with solutions to the reality of living with wildfires. This groundbreaking research institute will spearhead studies and innovations aimed at preventing, mitigating, responding to and recovering from wildfires.
The wildfire institute demonstrates TRU's leadership in wildfire science research and innovation. As Canada faces an alarming increase in wildfire activity — in BC alone, more land burned from 2017 to 2023 than in the previous 58 years combined (1959-2016) — the need for comprehensive research and adaptation strategies has never been more critical.
Located on TRU’s main campus in Kamloops, the wildfire institute is uniquely positioned to translate research to practice. The community is a hub for wildfire response including a Provincial Wildfire Coordination Centre for the BC Wildfire Service, a Provincial Airtanker Centre and the Central Region offices of Emergency Management BC. The institute, and the Kamloops campus, is on the traditional lands of the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc and we respectfully acknowledge the Indigenous Fire Keepers that have managed these lands since time immemorial.
TRU Wildfire, in collaboration with the BC Wildfire Service, is a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach to addressing current and future wildfire challenges. Learn more
