Off-campus work

International students on study permits are allowed to work off-campus for:

  • For the most up-to-date information on work eligibility hours, please refer to the IRCC.
  • Unlimited hours during scheduled academic breaks (e.g.: Summer and winter breaks, reading week, etc.)

Your responsibility as an employer is to:

  • Ensure the student you are hiring has a valid study permit.
  • Ensure the student has a Social Insurance Number (SIN) via a Confirmation of SIN letter or other government-issued documents.

Co-op placements or internships

International students can participate in co-op work terms or internships but must have a valid co-op or internship work permit before they start the position.

Co-op or Internship students are not subject to hour limitation in their employment but are protected under provincial employment standards.

Your responsibility as an employer is to:

  • Ensure the student you are hiring has a valid co-op or internship work permit.
  • Ensure the student has a Social Insurance Number (SIN) via a Confirmation of SIN letter or other government-issued documents.

Hiring recently graduated international students

BC Provincial nominee program (BC PNP)

International students can be supported for permanent residency by a BC employer through the BC provincial nominee program, an employer driven skilled worker immigration program designed to expedite permanent residency.
