Giving

What is TRU Giving’s legal name and charitable registration number?

For over 30 years, the Thompson Rivers University (TRU) Foundation has been raising funds for Thompson Rivers University. The Foundation provides funds for the financial support of TRU students and TRU's programs and projects. The Foundation serves as the manager and trustee of funds invested in the Foundation's Endowment Fund, which currently stands at $32 million.

The TRU Foundation is a registered society under the statutes of the Province of British Columbia and a registered charity with Canada Revenue Agency. We can issue charitable donation receipts to all philanthropic donations over $10. TRU Foundation’s Canadian Charitable Registration is #131135691RR0001.

What are the costs of an academic year for a single full-time student?

To study for one academic year, a domestic student can expect to pay more than $20,000 — and with inflation, those costs are rising. An estimated cost breakdown is as follows:

  • Tuition - $5,542/year
  • Books and supplies - $1,500
  • TRU Residence - $7,950/academic year
  • Parking - $500
  • Food, transportation and miscellaneous - $4,941
How can I create a student award?

The TRU Foundation has three funding options for student support: bursaries, scholarships and awards. Whether your intent is to assist a student struggling financially, reward a student for academic achievement in a course or over a period of time, or acknowledge a student’s ability to balance academic performance with other accomplishments and interests, we can help you make an investment that has an impact. For a complete guide to creating a student award, view our Establishing Awards Quick Guide. Or contact us at 250-828-5264 or foundation@tru.ca and we’ll be happy to help.

What’s the difference between a bursary, a scholarship and an award?

A bursary is based on financial need. Students must complete a financial-need assessment. Bursaries are only open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

A scholarship is based on academic achievement. Students need a minimum 3.50 post-secondary GPA to qualify.

An award is based on academic achievement or extracurricular meritorious accomplishment based on a competitive assessment.
